Why do I need a web site?
More and more, potential clients look on the web first for someone capable of giving them what they want. This will usually be their first introduction to your business. Make that first impression count!
How much does a web site cost?
It varies, depending on the number of pages and pictures and whether or not you want dynamic content. You can get an estimate online.
How will my web site look?
We will consult with you on all aspects of your web site, including the design. We recommend that you browse the web and find three or four sites that have the basic look and feel you want your site to have. We always code to your recommendations and get your feedback every step of the way.
What's the difference between a static and a dynamic site?
A static site is essentially a document; it provides information without change or interaction. Dynamic pages use programming to interact with the user, change or update information, or provide for applications such as a shopping cart.
How long does it take to make a web site?
It varies. The amount of time a web site takes depends on how complex it is, how many pictures, number of pages, etc. Also, more elaborate designs take longer. Your contract with WebAppExpressions.com will take the form of a Statement of Work which defines the estimated time frame for completion. Delays can result depending on how quickly you respond to our queries for more information, or for approval of work performed.
What is hosting, and why do I need it?
In order to view a web page online, it must be "hosted" on a "server." Hosting means that the files that make up the web site are placed on a particular computer, which is the server, and that server gives the files to people on the internet who browse the web site. Although WebAppExpressions.com does not provide hosting, we will work with you to find a hosting provider that meets your needs at a price agreeable to you.
How do I get a web name?
The technical term is "domain name," such as "webappexpressions.com". The process involves "registering" a domain name, which means paying a domain name registrar to reserve the name, after which the name can be applied to your web site. Generally, the fee for registration must be paid every year. Usually, your hosting provider will also be your registrar; again, we will work with you to find an acceptable solution.
What if I don't have a logo?
We can create one, not only for your site but for your print media as well. We will consult with you on the look and purpose for the logo and work with you along every step of the creation process. Again, this is not considered part of the normal process of creating a web site and so additional charges will apply.
Can I get email with my web site?
Usually, your hosting provider will include email. Again, we will work with you to find one that suits your needs, and make sure you have the number of email addresses you require and can access easily.
Can my web site have animations on it?
Sure. We recommend not using too much animation because it can be distracting, but a little can go a long way. We can create animations for you, but this will result in additional charges as it's not considered part of the web design fee.
Can my web site play sounds?
Yes, but it's considered bad form to have sounds automatically play when visiting the web site. Visitors to your site find it very annoying when sounds come out of their speakers unexpectedly, and will usually leave your site immediately when they hear it. However, we can put sounds on your web site for people to directly request. A band might want samples of their songs online, or an orator might want his speeches to be available. We can set up audio options and make sure they are only available at the direct request of the visitor.
Can I get Flash content?
Yes. Flash animations can be eye-catching, and we can also design a Flash "banner" so that you can advertise on other pages (this will result in additional charges). However, we strongly discourage the use of Flash for page content or navigation, or for access to vital site functions.
Can I use existing photographs?
Yes, if you own them. Using someone else's photographs usually requires the payment of a "royalty," meaning a fee paid to the photographer for using the photograph online. Generally, your own photographs are fine, and we can use your digital camera photos or scan your photo prints. We also have access to royalty-free photo libraries and can find suitable photos for your needs.
We will perform all of the cropping and resizing necessary to use your photo on the web as part of the normal web creation process. We can also perform photo retouching and manipulation, although there will be an additional charge for this service.
Will my web site show up in searches?
Sure. We will design your site for search engines and submit it to the most popular ones. Within a week or two (usually much less), your site will be showing up on web searches. We will also consult with you on how to get optimal placement of your web site in the search rankings. This is a part of the normal web creation process, and so there is no additional charge for this service.
